The SASSA SRD grant pays R370 per month. This amount has remained unchanged since it was increased from R350 to R370. The grant is paid monthly into your chosen bank account or available for collection at designated retail outlets.
How long does it take for SASSA to approve an SRD application?
SASSA typically processes SRD applications within 5 to 15 working days. However, during peak periods or when additional verification is needed, it can take up to 30 days. You will receive an SMS notification once a decision has been made on your application.
Can I apply for the SRD grant if I am self-employed?
You may still qualify for the SRD grant if you are self-employed but earning below R624 per month. However, if SASSA detects any formal or informal income exceeding this threshold through their verification checks, your application will be declined.
Do I need a bank account to receive the SRD grant?
No, a bank account is not required. You can choose to collect your grant at designated retail outlets such as Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Boxer, or Usave using your ID document. However, if you do have a bank account, payments can be deposited directly - this is usually faster and more convenient.
How often do I need to reapply for the SRD grant?
You do not need to reapply monthly. Once approved, SASSA will continue paying the grant each month as long as you remain eligible. SASSA runs automatic monthly checks against government databases, and if your circumstances change (for example, if you find employment), your grant may be suspended.
What happens if I provide false information on my SRD application?
Providing false information on a SASSA application is a criminal offence. If SASSA discovers that you have provided incorrect or fraudulent information, your grant will be terminated, you may be required to repay all amounts received, and criminal charges may be laid against you.
Can foreigners apply for the SASSA SRD grant?
Permanent residents of South Africa can apply for the SRD grant. However, asylum seekers, refugees with valid permits, and holders of special dispensation permits may also be eligible. Tourists, visitors, and undocumented foreigners are not eligible.
I applied but never received an SMS - what should I do?
If you have not received any communication from SASSA after applying, check your status online at srd.sassa.gov.za. Make sure the phone number linked to your application is correct and that your phone can receive SMS messages. You can also call 0800 60 10 11 to enquire about your application.
