What does R370 actually stand for?

R370 is the current monthly amount of the SASSA Social Relief of Distress grant (SRD). The grant launched in May 2020 at R350 as a COVID-era emergency support payment. In April 2024 the amount was increased to R370 - the level it sits at today, with no further increase in the April 2026 budget. The R350 nickname is still used interchangeably with R370 on social media and in older news articles, but the actual payment for every approved beneficiary is R370.

The grant is means-tested. Anyone aged 18 to 59 who is a South African citizen, permanent resident, asylum seeker or special permit holder, with a monthly income under R624, no other social grant, and no UIF / NSFAS / government payroll income can qualify. Eligibility is re-tested every month.

Why does my R370 status show declined this month?
SRD eligibility is re-checked every month. Even if you were approved last month, a new bank deposit, UIF registration, or income detected by SARS can cause a decline this month. The portal shows the specific reason - check it and appeal within 90 days if you disagree.
Can I get R370 back-pay for missed months?
Yes - if a previously declined month is overturned on appeal, SASSA pays the R370 for each affected month as a lump sum. Successful appeals can recover multiple months at once.
